Security risk much?
Looks like DHS has hit a serious bump in the road with their plans to implant the information-gathering RFID card into the REAL ID. The Chaos Computer Club in Germany, along with students from the University of Virginia, has recently not only hacked the chip but cracked it.
What does this mean? A few months ago the chip was hacked in California so that people could mimic the signals located within the ID card to enter secure buildings, as was showcased in a previous blog.
However, now the chip has been cracked. This means that the chip can now be fully utilized. For example the Chaos Computer Club was able to read out data, recharge payment cards, copy RFID cards or generate “new” users.
New user accounts? Kinda puts a cramp in the whole “REAL ID will stop illegal immigration” spin.
